A short history of Oldsmar
Automobile pioneer Ransom E. Olds bought about 37,500 acres at the top of Old Tampa Bay in April 1916 to build a planned community first called R. E. Olds-on-the-Bay. A 1921 hurricane damaged the young town, it was renamed Tampa Shores in 1927, and it went back to Oldsmar in 1937. The 2020 census counted about 14,900 residents.
The original town plan included around 10 miles of shoreline on Old Tampa Bay, with docks, a depot and a sawmill. Today's waterfront includes R.E. Olds Park and residential canals off the bay.
The shoreline in Oldsmar
Oldsmar grew slowly for decades and then quickly from 1990 on, so many waterfront homes and walls are newer than in the south county. Canal lots off the bay have shallower water and softer bottoms than Gulf-side lots.
