Getting to know Safety Harbor
Safety Harbor sits on the west shore of Old Tampa Bay at Espiritu Santo Springs, which Hernando de Soto named in 1539. Count Odet Philippe homesteaded the area in 1823, and Philippe Park still preserves a Tocobaga ceremonial mound. Earlier names included Worth's Harbor and Green's Springs. The city incorporated in 1917 and had about 17,000 residents in 2020.
The name is usually tied to ships finding a safe harbor once they reached this part of the bay. Today the spa resort sits over the springs, and the bayfront runs from the downtown waterfront park north toward Philippe Park.
The shoreline in Safety Harbor
Safety Harbor's population has been stable since about 2000, so its waterfront homes span older bayfront houses and late-20th-century subdivisions. Bay-facing walls take wind-driven chop from the open bay more than canal walls do.
