A short history of Belleair Beach
Belleair Beach occupies part of Sand Key, a barrier island that was uninhabited before the 1940s and used briefly as a bombing range by pilots from MacDill Field during World War II. Platting began around 1946–47, and the city incorporated in March 1950. The 2020 census counted about 1,600 residents.
About 72 percent of the city's area is water. The Gulf side is beach; the bay side is lined with canals and harbor-front lots facing Clearwater Harbor and the Belleair Causeway.
What Belleair Beach seawalls are up against
Belleair Beach's residential canals were developed after the war on a barrier island, so walls hold back sandy fill with water on the other side. Bayside homes here took surge in 2024 like the rest of Sand Key.
